Effects of Human Ageing on Periodontal Tissues

چکیده

Aging and death are two natural consequences to which the human individuals are subject after their birth. Improvement in both social living conditions and health care has led to a greater life span in the world 1, resulting in an increase in periodontal disease expectancy among the dentate elderly 2. Although moderate loss of both alveolar bone and periodontal attachment is common in the elderly, severe periodontitis, defined as periodontal attachment loss of 6 mm or more and radiographic bone loss of 50% or more involving at least one tooth, is not a natural consequence of ageing. Some loss of periodontal attachment and alveolar bone may be expected in older persons, but age alone in healthy adults does not lead to a critical loss of periodontal support 3. Human ageing induces histophysiological and clinical alterations in oral tissues 4. These alterations must be understood to differentiate pathological conditions from the altered physiology of oral tissues resulting from ageing 5. Some studies in humans and animals have demonstrated that alterations in periodontium dynamics occur with age 6,7. In spite of the fact that the periodontal disease severity is known to be associated with age, functional changes in periodontal tissue cells during the ageing process have not been well characterized 8. It is important to define how cellular ageing affects the progression of periodontal diseases associated with ageing 6. The understanding of the influence of human aging in the dynamic of the inflammatory process in patients with periodontal disease may help in the treatment planning of these patients.

A Nano-indentation Identification Technique for Viscoelastic Constitutive Characteristics of Periodontal Ligaments

Introduction: Nano-indentation has recently been employed as a powerful tool for determining the mechanical properties of biological tissues on nano and micro scales. A majority of soft biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons exhibit viscoelastic or time-dependent behaviors. The constitutive characterization of soft tissues is among very important subjects in clinical medicine and espe...

Effect of Zinc-Deficient Diet on Oral Tissues and Periodontal Indices in Rats

Zinc (Zn) as a nutritional factor affects the health of the oral tissues. This study was done for the evaluation of the effects of zinc deficiency on the oral tissues of rats. The study was carried out on 14 male Wistar rats, cessation of lactation on the 24th day after birth. The rats were randomly divided into two groups. Zinc deficient (ZD) diet was used for one group and another group was f...

Evaluation of Periodontal Disease Effect on the Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Nerve Growth Factor in Dental Pulp

Introduction: Researchers have always been interested in the close and mutual relationship between the pulp and periodontal tissues. Although the effects of pulpal disease on periodontium have been well known, the clear relationship between periodontitis and pulp has not been documented . It seems that bacteria and inflammatory products of periodontitis can affect pulp through accessory canals,...

بررسی میزان بیان (expression فیبرونکتین، کلاژن نوع I و   TGF-ß)وسط سلول‌های فیبروبلاست لیگامان پریودونتال انسانی در مجاورت مواد پر کننده انتهای ریشه

Background and Aim: Several materials have been introduced for retrograde fillings, pulp capping and sealing root perforations, but their biological effect on vital tissues and cells is not clear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reaction of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts to four root canal filling materials: Pro Root MTA, Root MTA, Portland cement and amalgam. Materials a...

Effects of human aging on periodontal tissues.

Loss of teeth is frequently associated with periodontal disease in older adults. The aim of this review was to present the effects of aging on the periodontal tissues. Aging alone does not lead to critical loss of periodontal attachment in healthy elderly persons. The effects of aging on periodontal tissues are based on molecular changes in the periodontal cells, which intensify bone loss in el...
